Chapter 1 Definition of Islam It is difficult to generalize about Islam. First, the word itself often has two different but related meanings, equivalent to Christianity and the Christian world (Christendom). Represents the meaning of religion, belief system and worship; another meaning is a civilization that was born and prospered under the patronage of that religion. The term Islam itself has a history of more than 14 centuries, has 1.03 billion followers, and has extremely diverse religious and cultural traditions. Christianity and the Christian world represent longer periods and greater membership-more than 2 billion followers, more than 20 centuries and even greater diversity. However, some generalizations can be made about so-called Christianity, Judaism-Christianity, post-Christianity, and simpler Western civilization. Although it may be more difficult and sometimes dangerous to generalize Islamic civilization, it is impossible and sometimes beneficial.
